the challenge

Today apple production is one of the farming industries with the highest use of pesticides. The reason is that modern apple varieties have a low resilience against diseases.

Our mission is to offer a broad variety of old and local fruit trees focussing on healthy varieties.

“de-gamle-sorter”

  • The explanation is easy. With the invention of chemical fertilizer and pesticides in the 1940s “modern” fruit tree industry focus was no longer on healthy plants but on economic efficiency and mass production. Diseases - can be fought with chemicals.

A recent study of logbooks of apple production farmers in Tirol has revealed that 20-30 sprays per year is normal for conventional farmers. Organic farmers often over 30-40 times a year because their use of chemicals is limited and they choose to spray preventively.

solution

We believe it is important to keep developing old varieties as a resilience strategy for the future.

  • Hans-Jochaim Bannier, a well known german pomologist, says modern apples are breeds of the same 6 apple sorts. He claims this is a dangerous development considering the influences of climate change.

Germany has a long history of recording the blooming time, just to mention one important change. Apple trees bloom 13 days earlier than 50 years ago

There is another important reason for keeping the old varieties alive. Many might not know that some of the old varieties do not cause allergic problems for those with an apple allergy.

On top of that many of the old varietes af more resistent to diseases. Thereby a good strategy to avoid chemicals. Diseases depend also on the local conditions. Knowing your local soil and climate conditions can help you choose the right resilient variety and possibility to grow delicious nutrient-dense apples.

How you can take an action?

PLANT AND PICK

The healthiest apple is freshly picked.

So plant your own tree and enjoy.

  • Freshness can have an impact on the nutritional value of fruits and vegetables, including apples. Here's how freshness can influence the nutritional value of apples:

  • Apples contain various antioxidants, such as flavonoids and phenolic compounds, which contribute to their health benefits. The antioxidant content can vary based on factors like apple variety, growing conditions, and storage. Freshly harvested apples are generally believed to have higher antioxidant levels compared to older apples that have been stored for an extended period.

  • Apples contain vitamin C, an essential nutrient with antioxidant properties. However, vitamin C is sensitive to air, light, and heat, and it can degrade over time. As apples age, they may lose some of their vitamin C content. Freshly harvested and recently picked apples are likely to have higher levels of vitamin C compared to apples that have been stored for a long time.

  • Apples are a good source of dietary fiber, which plays a vital role in digestive health. The fiber content in apples remains relatively stable over time, so the impact of freshness on fiber content is minimal.

  • Fresh apples often have a crisp texture and a vibrant, appealing taste. As apples age, they may become softer and lose some of their flavor.

when to plant

Next best time is today. And if you want to plant your own or give a gift to someone it is important to know that apple trees are best transferred from one growing spot to another during its dormant period which starts in november and ends in march.

  • In this period you can transfer them without any soil which makes transportation much lighter. An apple tree planted in late spring and summer can be done but needs a lot of watering. And water is a scarce resource. So why not work with nature instead of against.
